2017 WebRTC Industry Mergers & Acquisitions in Review

2017 was undoubtedly a game-changing year for the Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) industry as the WebRTC 1.0 specification enters into the final stages. Apple finally joined the party by adding WebRTC to their latest High Sierra release after what seemed like a decade of waiting. Usage has increased tenfold with companies such as Facebook seeing audio and video calls double in their Messenger app to over 17 billion from 2016 to 2017. Alone, Google Chrome browsers are streaming over 1.5 billion minutes of audio and video each week.

It is clear, WebRTC is now the dominant real-time communications protocol for companies looking to integrate live audio and video capabilities into their products and services. As such, many companies are now scrambling and looking for a way to adopt the technology quickly, leading to lots of mergers and acquisitions in the market.

In 2017, we saw 15+ acquisitions adding to the 30+ mergers and acquisitions we saw in 2015 and 2016. I believe this trend will continue as we head into 2018 and beyond. I am excited to see the growth the industry has been able to accomplish in such a short time.

If you have been waiting to integrate real-time communications into your product, now is the time! Contact us today for a free consultation.
